Final Project

The scope of my final project is to create a sound collage that addresses certain apocalyptic themes that we discussed in the course. A sound collage consists of clips of sound that are constructed to create a story or make a statement.

The sound collage itself engages with the theme of how characters in apocalypse novels must navigate the chaos and destruction of the world they are living within. We see this main theme in the lives of characters such as Sarat in American War as she fights for revenge during the war, Mark Spitz as he deals with a zombie apocalypse in Zone One, and the prophet as he is shaped by the circumstances surrounding the widespread pandemic in Station 11.

The main song I use in my sound collage is Harry Styles’ "Sign of the Times." For the song, the narrator is acknowledging that the end is near, and they are pleading with someone to “get away from here,” implying they need to get away from the destruction and chaos of the apocalypse. The song addresses apocalyptic themes such as moving on, transitioning from the old life into the new, and living in the last moment with someone.

I frame the song around news clips that highlight certain apocalypse conditions, such as a zombie apocalypse, climate change, endless war, natural disasters, and the end of humanity itself. These news clips allow me to set up the story within the sound collage. These themes include leaving behind the life pre-apocalypse and navigating the chaos of the post-apocalyptic world. We see these themes play out in novels such as Station 11, American War, and Zone One.
